Here is Stocker Oil Co, Inc's troubleshooting and no heat checklist:

  • Check that your thermostat setting is at least 5 degrees higher than your current room temperature
  • Note: some thermostats also need to be set to "heat."
  • Check the batteries in your thermostat to see if they need to be replaced.
  • Check to see if the power switch near the system is set to the “ON” position.
  • Note: there may also be another emergency power switch that controls the system’s operation.
  • Make sure the circuit breakers are on. It is common for a breaker to trip. The circuit breaker box looks like a metal wall cabinet. It’s usually located in the basement or utility room.
  • Check the amount of oil in your tank. If you have an above ground tank, an attached gauge will show you the level, like a fuel gauge in a car. If the tank gauge reads less than 1/8-inch full or appears to be empty, you may be out of fuel.
  • Reset your system. Press and hold the reset button on the burner for three seconds. This will reset your unit and may restore your heat. If your system does not start after you push the reset button, DO NOT PUSH IT AGAIN. It could cause the combustion chamber to flood with oil and result in a lengthy and costly repair.
  • If you still do not have heat, contact the office 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • How do I read the tank gauge on my fuel tank?

    You should locate the top of the disc in the float to see how full your tank is.

  • How much fuel to I have in my tank?

    The following measurements are approximations based on a standard 275-gallon fuel tank:

    • 3/4 tank = 180 gallons
    • 1/2 tank = 120 gallons
    • 1/4 tank = 60 gallons
  • Where is my reset button located?

    The reset button is located on the control on the burner, normally on the right side of this control. Reset buttons are typically red.

  • When should I have my heating system tuned up?

    We recommend having your annual tuneup performed in the spring/summer seasons so your system will be ready to operate safely and efficiently during the winter season.

  • How often should I have my equipment checked?

    We recommend servicing your heating system on an annual basis so that your system runs safely and efficiently.

  • Do you offer service contracts?

    We offer annual service policies for heating systems. Please contact the office for more information.

  • Do you use your own service technicians and installation specialists or do you hire subcontractors?

    We use only our certified, experienced technicians for service and installations. We do not subcontract our work. Your comfort and our reputation are important to us!

  • Approximately how long does it take to complete an installation of a heating or cooling system?

    Most of our installations are completed in a day or day and a half, though every job is different and some take longer than others.

  • Would I save money if I converted to another fuel or electricity?

    Because heating fuels are measured differently (gallons, therms, kilowatt hours), the best way to compare prices is to look at the cost for each fuel to produce the same amount of heat. A common way to do this is in dollars per million BTU’s. When using this method, heating oil has been the clear winner for more than ten years because it packs more BTU’s of heat than natural gas, propane, or electricity.

  • How are fuel prices set?

    Fuels like home heating oil, natural gas, and propane are traded on the commodities market, where prices go up and down like they do in the stock market. Heating oil, natural gas, and propane prices are affected by global politics, demand, and many other factors.

  • At what temperature should I set my thermostat?

    Different people feel comfortable at different temperatures. Pay less attention to the numbers on the thermostat display (or the position of the temperature indicator on a nondigital display) and more to how comfortable the room feels to you. When you feel comfortable, check the setting. That’s the right temperature for you!

  • What is the fan "auto-on" switch on the thermostat used for?

    When the switch is in the “on” position, the fan will run constantly; this provides constant air circulation. You can use the fan “on” setting to reduce temperature variations in a multistory home. When the switch is in the “auto” position, the fan cycles on and off with the rest of the heating or cooling system.

  • Should I install a programmable thermostat?

    Absolutely! Programmable thermostats are especially useful for people who are away from home at regular intervals. They allow for customized comfort settings around-the-clock, and they can cut heating and cooling costs as much as 33%.

  • What methods of payment do you accept?
